What is New Year's Resolution Coaching?
Ever since I became a New Year’s Resolution Coach, I have gotten lots and lots of questions. I wanted to share some of them here, in case they’re questions that you have too.
I love that people ask all of these questions! I love hearing their interest in resolutions, sharing about what I do, and helping them to see the possibility that awaits them in their own lives.
Maybe some of these questions are one that you have too - but even if they’re not, I hope you enjoy learning about New Year’s Resolution Coaching anyway.
And so, without further ado, here are the top 10 questions I get asked regularly about what New Year’s Resolution Coaching is, why I do it, and how it can help!
Why do you coach people on their resolutions?
Largely because I’ve been obsessed with resolutions for years. When I was working on building my coaching business and looking to niche down to help people with something specific, the idea of coaching people on their resolutions kept coming up. The idea of New Year’s Resolution Coaching really resonated with me and I realized I didn’t want to do anything else! Now I’m reminded every day that this is the perfect job for me. I love helping people feel supported in their resolutions every day of the year.
Does it only help people with “resolutions”?
No. I think that setting resolutions is a very powerful way to identify and work towards the things that we really want, but I don’t only help my clients with their resolutions. I see it as my role to help them reach all of their goals, big and small - whether they’re in the form of resolutions or not.
Aren’t resolutions just for the new year?
No! But I will admit that a large part of the reason that many resolutions fail is that they are only a part of the conventional conversation on and around January 1st. While resolutions may normally just be made at the start of the New Year, they are meant to be kept every day of the year. I am passionate about helping my clients keep their resolutions all the way to December 31 - and then we get to start all over again, of course! Part of what makes resolutions so effective is the implied one-year container. It is a perfect length of time to accomplish some big goals, without being so long that they get lost or forgotten. So while I recommend people set their resolutions on or around January 1st, you can make them any day of the year - March 4th, or June 22nd, or September 18th, or any day in between. Not all of my clients set “resolutions,” but I do try to help them think of their goals in terms of a year - both to help them stretch a bit, and also to help gauge what is realistic. And of course, if they want to set resolutions, I am all for it!
What do clients gain from working with you?
The biggest things that my clients always gain from our time together are increased self-confidence and self-trust. I want my clients to believe that when they say they will do something (like get up when their alarm goes off) or set a goal (like running a marathon), it is as good as done. The coaching that we do together helps to give them the tools that they need to make that a reality. My clients also become confident in processing emotions so that they know they can handle any feeling, even the hard ones that they will need to face as they work towards their goals. Coaching isn’t about getting rid of all negative emotions, but rather choosing to feel harder emotions (like determination) intentionally when we need to since that is often what it will take to reach our big goals. And oh yeah, my clients reach their goals too - but that is just the cherry on top of all of their growth.
Does it also help people with general life coaching issues?
Yes. Our lives are so intertwined. I may have a client who just wants to read more or run a marathon, but we will inevitably end up coaching on issues around money, relationships, health, time-management, energy-management, processing emotions, and so on. The reason that so many people give for not reaching their goals is the trouble or resistance or distraction they face from other areas of their life - so we work through all of it.
How does New Year’s Resolution Coaching work?
This answer is a bit more practical and tangible than some of the others, but I believe in sharing all the details, especially when someone asks. My work with clients generally involves meeting with them through Zoom sessions every other week. We create a strategic plan to help them reach their specific goals, work through the hurdles that they face along the way, and celebrate all their wins (big and small!). I am also always available to my clients between sessions through text, email, or Voxer for support. Because I know that while the work we do in sessions is so powerful when you're dealing with a rough Thursday afternoon, you need someone by your side at that moment too.
What kinds of goals have you helped people with?
I have helped my clients achieve so many things that they really want! Everything from weight-loss, to reading more, to planning for (and taking!) the trip of a lifetime. Sometimes I work with my clients on less concrete goals too - some want to show more love to the people in their lives, others want to keep their temper, and some want to stop feeling overwhelmed all of the time. I love to help my clients do everything from getting up when their alarm goes off, to going to bed at a reasonable time, and everything in between.
In what ways is coaching effective?
Coaching is a transformational practice. For people who are ready to start pursuing the things that they really want and to take their lives to the next level, coaching is the answer. The job of a coach is to create an environment where you feel comfortable with being vulnerable and like you are safe to grow. They will help you process through the things that are holding you back and increase the awareness of what is really going on behind the scenes.
Do you work with international clients?
Yes! I actually have a large percentage of clients who are located outside of the US. No matter where you are live, you probably face many of the same struggles when it comes to checking off your resolutions.
How can I work with you?
It’s probably no surprise that this is one of my favorite questions to answer!
