Why I Became a Certified Life Coach
I didn’t always know I wanted to become a certified life coach. In fact, not too many years ago I didn’t even know what life coaching was. And not too many years before that, no one did.
But over the years, as I spent more and more time reading personal development books and listening to podcasts, I became more familiar with the concept as it developed. And before too long, I began doing it with some friends (some of whom pointed out I’d technically been doing that all along), and some clients as well.
It wasn’t until I was coaching casually on the side of my professional organizing business that I decided that I wanted to take it to the next level. I wanted to gain more tools, skills, and resources to be able to serve my clients at the highest level. I figured that I would take the next step to become certified - eventually.
One of those podcasts that I regularly listened to was the Life Coach School podcast and over time, I began to do some research on various certifications. I planned to save up and tackle that in a few years - there was no reason to rush after all.
While there were (and are) lots of great certifications out there, I pretty quickly knew I wanted to be certified by the Life Coach School. I was fascinated by their teachings and felt like it would provide me with everything I needed to become the best coach possible for my clients.
I pushed that off to my 5-year plan and figured I would consider it again once I had saved the money and was ready to take the time to invest in the program. Then, in October 2019, I got the email that enrollment was open. I knew that I needed to do it. Not in 5 years. Not in 3. Now.
There have been quite a few times in my life where I found myself taking action for reasons that I could hardly articulate, even to myself, and that was one of them.
I made a plan, signed up, and waited for class to start.
The week that it did, in March 2020, the world shut down and I had more time, space, and energy to dedicate to the program than I would have ever expected. It was perfect timing.
I was thrilled to go through the program, learn valuable tools, connect with dozens of other amazing coaches, and know that I was being taught the most valuable lessons of my life.
However, becoming a coach through the Life Coach School wasn’t just about continuing my education, building those great relationships, or being able to say that I’m “certified” (although all of those things were a definite plus!).
More importantly, it was about ensuring that I had all the best resources + knowledge to share with my clients.
Investing in yourself can be scary, but it is something that always reaps infinite rewards. And if you’re a coach, those rewards will benefit you, and in the long term, those who you strive to serve as well.
If you are a coach, or considering becoming one, and you want to be certified, I encourage you to do it! Surprisingly, that is a pretty controversial opinion in the coaching world, especially since it isn’t something that is required. But if you agree with the reasons I outlined above (or just want to get certified), do it.
You certainly don’t need to, but if you feel that pull to do it, that decision will serve you and your clients well.
